RDA meeting: October 26, 2007
by Valerie Waters, RD

This half day meeting was jam packed with great information providing 4 CPEU's! The focus was on Diabetes including three great presentations on behavioral change, emerging treatments in diabetes, and current considerations in nutrition therapy for diabetes. All of the speakers engaged the audiance and provided practical and useful up to date information and tools. A guest speaker was flown in from St. Louis (provided by Accu-Chek) and presented a very interesting topic on the seven tipping points of diabetics including, 1) depression, 2) "no big deal", 3) inevitability, 4) treatment skepticism, 5) unrealistic plans for action, 6) poor social support and 7) environmental pressures. For more meetings, be sure to check the calendar of events and sign up either by PayPal or through registration forms.

RDA meeting: September 11, 2007
by Valerie Waters, RD

RDA kicked off its year with a webinar on "Dietary Supplements: Navigating the Facts and Fads". Several dietitians and dietetic interns gathered to listen to an online webcast that was presented by ADA in April of this year. The topic struck many RD's as something we need to become more knowledgable on.  This presentation offered advice on how to address patients about alternative therapies, how to find information regarding different therapies and what to do with this information as a dietitian as well as communicating it to other healthcare professionals.

RDA meeting: May 4th, 2007
by Ka Wong, MS, RD, CNSD

RDA had its last meeting of the membership year the past Friday at the Virginia state University (VSU). It was a dinner meeting sponsored by the School of Agriculture of VSU.  After everyone enjoyed a nice hot meal, Ka Wong installed the incoming Board officers.  They were Marilyn Trownsell, incoming President, and Valerie Waters, incoming President-elect.  Pam Davis and Pam Speich are the incoming Nominating Committee and Secretary, respectively. The meeting's highlight was a talk on Health Attitudes Among African-American Women in Virginia presented by Dr. Jill Rowe from VCU. Her sharing of her research experience sparked many discussions and questions in the audience.  RDA will resume CEU meetings in September 2007 so be sure to renew the membership by August and check the calendar of events.  Have a wonderful and healthy summer!

RDA meeting: March 3rd, 2007
by Ka Wong, MS, RD, CNSD

The Saturday meeting was jump-started by a relaxing yoga/pilates class taught by Caroline Fornshell, Certified Personal Trainer and a DPD student at VSU. Afterward, Dr. Brenda Malinauskas presented a very informative talk on the use of sports nutritional products and the nutritional requirements of endurance athletes. This presentation was especially applicable to a few of the attendees who've been training for a marathon in Virginia Beach in March.  Phyllis Woodson, MS, RD, CDE, who is the current President of Virginia Dietetic Association, sparked a lot of interest and discussion among the crowd on the idea of branding for the dietetics professions. Many attendees agreed that a follow-up on such important topic is needed so dietitians can gather their effort together to gain public recognition of the dietetics credentials.

RDA meeting: February 20th, 2007
by Ka Wong, MS, RD, CNSD

The participants dialed in at the comfort of their own homes and enjoyed a teleseminar titled "Pay Power for Dietitians: How to Ask for a Raise" offered by Pat Katepoo, RD.  Congratulations to Elaine Smith, who is winner of the Ready-for-a-Raise Workbook for Dietitians drawing. Here are their comments about the seminar:

"Thanks for a great teleseminar.  The information was very helpful. "

"Thank you. It was very easy to follow and apply to my own consulting practice."

"I enjoyed tonight's seminar.  You are very organized and present in a very understandable and thoughtful manner."

"Please continue to offer this and other related topics. This was my first teleseminar and I enjoyed the format."

"Thanks, it was great. I don't know what my expectations were going into it. Mostly, I wanted to see what a teleseminar is like and it was a nice change as a way to earn CEUs. I liked the action step approach and many good suggestions were given to promote and market our profession and skill set. I had forgotten to print the handout but could follow along without it because it was well organized with major points and objectives restated. Thanks again! "

RDA meeting: November 2nd, 2006
by Ka Wong, MS, RD, CNSD

About 35 people attended our 3rd RDA meeting of this membership period at The North Park Branch Library. Paula Schnurman, RD, enlightened our evening with a presentation on "Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator and its Applications to Nutrition and Lifestyle Counseling". The attendees completed the Myers-Briggs Personality Test and discovered their own basic temperaments. Paula discussed ways that the dietitians may use this personality profiling in nutrition therapy and counseling for behavior change. Of interest, we had a person from the general public who attended the meeting and she was very curious about the dietetics professionals and who dietitians are. She sure got a good impression by the end of the meeting.
