Rochelle Lightner, RD

Food Service Specialist/Nutrition Coordinator, Hanover County Schools

Membership Chairperson, RDA

It is a pleasure to introduce to you Rochelle Lightner, an enthusiastic and articulate young dietitian.  Rochelle grew up in Prince William County, Virginia and graduated from James Madison University in 2003 with a B.S. degree.  After graduation, she finished her internship with Virginia Tech in Northern Virginia.

Currently, Rochelle is a Food Service Specialist and Nutrition Coordinator in Hanover County Schools. This position is fairly new and it’s a very unique role for an R.D. On the food services side, Rochelle serves as a supervisor to the cafeterias, teaches the ServSafe certification course for the managers and basic food safety training for the food service assistants, processes Free and Reduced Price Meal applications, and maintains the department website (http://hcps.us/finance/food).

Her nutrition coordinator responsibilities include menu-planning, providing nutrition analysis of food items, and nutrition education for students and staff.  In addition, her work involves a lot of staff development which includes celebrating National Nutrition Month (NNM).  As a part of NNM programming, Rochelle provided workshops on reading food labels, weight loss, and featured nutrition articles that were distributed via email to school district employees.

Rochelle has worked hard to foster relationships with school administrators and teachers.  As a result, she was asked to get involved with classroom education and develop daily nutrition and wellness tips for some of the elementary schools; and weekly wellness tips for the staff at another school.   Rochelle also serves on the School Health Advisory Board and has been involved in the development of the local wellness policy.

There are so many different things on her job that she is passionate about.  Most of all, she is proud to be in this position as a dietitian, as there are very few RDs in school nutrition in a non-director role.  Hopefully, other school districts will follow suit.

After moving to Richmond in 2005, Rochelle wanted to network with other RDs in the area.  She has decided to join the RDA Board for both professional and social reasons.  As Membership Chair, she has been able to learn more about the members and has even run into a couple of classmates.  Rochelle would love to see more participation from the members, including involvement on the Board and the VDA Planning Committee (Richmond will be hosting the 2008 meeting and we want it to be a successful and worthwhile event!!).  Her other professional contributions include being the VDA representative for the Virginia Department of Health Maternal Mortality Review Team through the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.  Rochelle has definitely helped to be the voice for the dietitians in the public health arena.

In her free time, Rochelle loves to cook (from scratch) and bake.  She is also an avid reader – Sidney Sheldon and Sandra Brown are her favorite authors.  She is an adult volunteer for Junior 4H camp with Stafford and Prince William Counties.  She also mentors high school students.  Overall, Rochelle is a very driven young professional who values community service and truly enjoys giving back to the community.

Shae Perera, RD

Scholarships/Awards Chair, RDA

The Richmond Dietetic Association would like to recognize Shae Perera as our outstanding professional this quarter. Shae is currently working as a registered dietitian at Golden Clinical Services in geriatric care.  Recently promoted to a management position, Shae now oversees dietitians spanning twenty nursing homes from Virginia to Maryland.

Shae received his undergraduate degree in dietetics with a minor in psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He then completed his internship at Family Health Council in Pittsburgh, PA.  Shae came to Richmond from Pittsburg over 5 years ago and through hard work and commitment to his profession, he sees himself hopefully advancing to higher positions within his company but is also open to other opportunities in the future. To make himself more marketable he is currently working towards his MBA.

When asked how it feels to be a minority in this field, he responded, “I enjoy being a minority and feel that it is an advantage if you leave a good impression because you are more recognizable.” He also mentions, he enjoys working in a profession where the demand for RD services is now leading dietetics to a bright and more rewarding future.

Shae serves on the RDA board as the Scholarship and Awards Chairman. He was recently married this past June and keeps busy with his 4 yr. old Chihuahua named Bubba. When he can find time, Shae enjoys exercising and playing hockey.

marilyn

Marilyn Trownsell is the President of Richmond Dietetic Association. She has been serving the RDA members in the past few years as the chairperson of Nutrition Services Payment System and President-Elect. Marilyn came to RDA with a unique blend of professional experiences, which will be the highlight of this article.

Marilyn received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and finished her dietetic traineeship through the Tri-State Traineeship Program in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. She started her career as a clinical dietitian at Garden State Community Hospital in Marlton, NJ, which marked the beginning of her 12-year experiences as a clinical dietitian. After relocating to Minnesota, Marilyn’s professional experience branched out and blossomed. She honed her food service and administrative skills serving as the Patient Services Director and Associate Director of Food Services. While teaching foodservice management courses at a community college, she was an active member in the community by serving as an outreach speaker in community nutrition and was working closely with the American Heart Association and a diabetes group.  She has also started to build her private practice in Minnesota before moving to Richmond in 1987. Marilyn has worked as the RD/Eating Disorder Specialist at Charter Westbrook Behavior Health System Inc. in Richmond.

Currently, Marilyn continues her private practice and consulting work with an emphasis in geriatric care. To add a tasteful blend in her career, she specializes in culinary nutrition where sound nutrition advices can be communicated through healthy eating. She enjoys performing cooking demonstrations especially with herbs and bread making. This goes along well with her personal hobbies in gardening and cooking.  So look for Marilyn at our next RDA meeting and please join us to welcome her on board.
